Sunday Morning

-PRELUDE-
“Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” – arr. P. Hamm
-ACKNOWLEDGEMENT-
We acknowledge that the place where we are gathered today is the ancient and ancestral homeland of more than twenty Indigenous tribes. We mourn the loss of their lives, livelihoods, homes, and cultures, and acknowledge the legacy of violence against them.
We acknowledge that the space where we worship today was established and built by those whose Black ancestors were also abused and mistreated - some even bought and sold as enslaved people right here in our city.
We acknowledge the women who’ve faced unfair treatment and misogyny throughout the ages and we acknowledge those who identify as LGBTQ or other who’ve been mistreated and misunderstood.
We acknowledge our role and responsibility as professed followers of Christ to stand for and alongside all of these and others who have been and continue to be oppressed.
-SINGING TOGETHER-
"I Dream of a Church”
I DREAM OF A CHURCH WHERE EVERYONE IS WELCOME,
I DREAM OF A PLACE WE ALL CAN CALL HOME.
I DREAM OF A WORLD WHERE JUSTICE IS FLOWING,
WITH HOPE AND PEACE GROWING,
WHERE GOD’S WILL IS DONE.
MAKE IT SO, MAKE IT SO,
WE PRAY FOR THAT DAY, MAKE IT SO.
WE DREAM OF A WORLD
WHERE LOVE REIGNS AMONG US
AND YOUR WILL IS DONE,
O GOD, MAKE IT SO!

-OPENING PRAYER-
-SINGING TOGETHER-
"Love Lifted Me”
I WAS SINKING DEEP WITHIN,
FAR FROM THE PEACEFUL SHORE,
VERY DEEPLY DRAINED WITHIN,
SINKING TO RISE NO MORE.
BUT THE MAKER OF THE SEA
HEARD MY DESPAIRING CRY,
FROM THE WATERS LIFTED ME
NOW SAFE AM I.
LOVE LIFTED ME!
LOVE LIFTED ME!
WHEN NOTHING ELSE COULD HELP,
LOVE LIFTED ME.
LOVE LIFTED ME!
LOVE LIFTED ME!
WHEN NOTHING ELSE COULD HELP,
LOVE LIFTED ME.
ALL MY HEART TO HIM I GIVE,
EVER TO HIM I’LL CLING,
IN HIS BLESSED PRESENCE LIVE,
EVER HIS PRAISES SING,
LOVE SO MIGHTY AND SO TRUE,
MERITS MY SOUL’S BEST SONGS,
FAITHFUL, LOVING SERVICE, TOO,
TO HIM BELONG.
LOVE LIFTED ME!
LOVE LIFTED ME!
WHEN NOTHING ELSE COULD HELP,
LOVE LIFTED ME.
LOVE LIFTED ME!
LOVE LIFTED ME!
WHEN NOTHING ELSE COULD HELP,
LOVE LIFTED ME.

-SCRIPTURE-
1 Corinthians 12:12-13; 25-27a (MSG)
You can easily enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own body. Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you’re still one body. It’s exactly the same with Christ. By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in everything.
(This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we all come to drink. The old labels we once used to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer useful. We need something larger, more comprehensive.
The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.
You are Christ’s body—that’s who you are! You must never forget this.

A BLESSED LIGHT, A LOVE SO WIDE,
THAT SHINES SO DARKNESS CAN’T RESIDE;
A BAFFLING LOVE WE BARELY GRASP,
A MYSTERY REVEALED.
GOD’S GIFT TO US, A PROMISE BOLD;
THE SPIRIT’S WORD, A POW’R UNTOLD.
GOD’S SEED OF FAITH LIVES IN OUR HEARTS
AS WE’RE ROOTED AND GROUNDED,
ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE.
THE RICHNESS OF GOD’S LOVE DISPLAYED,
GOD’S WISDOM SET IN FULL ARRAY,
THE TAPROOT OF STRENGTH TO SERVE
EXCEEDS THE DREAMS WE HAVE.
WITH VERVE AND LIFE WE GROW BEYOND,
THIS FERTILE SOIL IN US HAS SPAWNED
A VITAL SENSE OF WHAT CAN BE
WHEN WE’RE ROOTED AND GROUNDED,
ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE.
TO US IS GIVEN AN INNER STRENGTH.
GOD’S LOVE: ITS HEIGHT AND DEPTH AND LENGTH;
THE SOURCE OF OUR SERENITY
IS BEDROCK ‘NEATH OUR LIVES.
A SOIL WHERE DEEPLY WE REMAIN,
THIS RICH, WARM EARTH OUR LIFE SUSTAINS.
WE RISE, WE GROW, GOD’S VINTAGE ALL,
EVER ROOTED AND GROUNDED,
ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE.
